Elvira Dones has written an unflinching and insightful novel about the Albanian mafia and the trafficking of women. It makes it very clear that there is nothing to romanticise in this story. The novel depicts a society overwhelmed by change. It shows dreams that crumble on the sidewalks of Europe – and in the midst of it all – small pockets of love and self-empowerment.
