Elias Canetti was born on 25 July 1905 in Russe (present-day Bulgaria) to Spanish-Jewish parents. In 1911 his family moved to England and in 1913, after the death of his father, to Vienna. Here Canetti studied natural sciences until 1929 and earned a doctorate in philosophy. After the “Anschluss” of Austria, he went to London, later to Zurich, where he died on 14 August 1994. In addition to numerous accolades, he received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1981.
