❤️Congratulations to Miljenko Jergović!

We are delighted that the Croatian-Bosnian writer Miljenko Jergović has been awarded the Leipzig Book Prize for European Understanding 2026 for his story collection “The Crazy Heart. Sarajevo Marlboro Remastered” (Suhrkamp, 2024; translated from Croatian by Brigitte Döbert).

Jergović is one of the most distinctive literary voices of the Western Balkans. His new collection returns to the siege of Sarajevo—his birthplace—capturing, with both sharpness and lyricism, the fractures of history and the fragility of everyday life. The jury highlights his attention to subtle details and his resistance to simplification and nationalist narratives.
